Under general supervision, provides a variety of professional nursing and patient care services to support the functions and operation of the Public Health or Behavioral Health Departments clinics, acute facilities and programs.

- Administers general nursing care to patients in a clinic or community setting; performs nursing procedures such as administering medications and prescribed medical treatments; observes patients' conditions and behavior; reports significant changes to supervisor or physician and records nursing notes on patient chart; gives first aid as needed.
- Interviews and observes patients to ascertain medical history and current condition; reviews patientsâ records; takes vital signs, assesses current condition, and records and reports all information.
- Assembles treatment supplies, prepares patients for examination, and assists in examination and treatment of patient.
- May provide direct patient treatment per written clinic protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Performs various tests and treatments; administers injections and other medications; collects, labels and logs specimens.
- Counsels patients, giving supportive care; may lead individual or group therapy sessions with patients.
- Reads and evaluates written information such as admission reports, physiciansâ evaluations and diagnosis, and staff notes; evaluates problem presented by clients and develops treatment plans.
- Instructs individual patients on follow-up care, birth control, communicable disease prevention, hygiene, general health care, and treatment of specific medical conditions.
- Maintains records, inventory and physical security of drugs and medical supplies; sets up and stocks medication cart, crash cart, and supplies; orders and requests supplies as needed.
- Prepares records and reports; may prepare statistical reports to document immunizations administered for purposes of funding grant programs.
- Performs simple laboratory work, and prepares specimens for laboratory; obtains tests results, and notifies patients of test results, following departmental and program guidelines.
- Performs Tuberculosis testing; screens clients with positive Tuberculosis skin tests; coordinates referrals for chest X-rays; works closely with public health nurses on communicable disease control and treatment. clients with positive Tuberculosis skin tests
- Collects and enters immunization data into computer registry.
- Performs administrative duties; receives, logs in and files a variety of reports, client charts, client interactions and other documents; responds to and refers incoming telephone calls.
- Prepares room and equipment for use by Nurse Practitioners and Physicians; assures sterilization and cleanliness of instruments and the environment.
- Provide medical case management for eligible clients per specific program guidelines
- Provides client centered education and counseling services regarding a variety of health topics as required per Department protocols.
- Screens and administers immunizations for children and adults; may advise clients regarding required and recommended immunizations for children and travel destinations.
- Conduct training, technical assistance and quality assurance activities with county, public and private health care providers; schools and community agencies per specific program guidelines.
- Provide specific necessary health education to clients as needed.
- Participate in program development, analysis, and outreach.
- Assists Public Health Assistants and volunteers as appropriate.
- Adheres to the confidentiality standards of the Privacy Act of 1974, {U.S.C. § 552A} as amended.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Ability to quickly assess medical issues complicating psychiatric care.
- Observes and reports patientsâ mental and physical condition and behavior to physician and mental health treatment team as part of overall assessment and treatment planning; implements assigned parts of treatment plan.
- Ability to rapidly interpret and understand laboratory values in relation to psychiatric conditions.
- Performs on-going nursing assessments of patients on the daily census or census by shift.
- Demonstrates fundamental knowledge of psychotropic, mood management and related medications â" their benefits, side effects, and a correct therapeutic dosage.
- Ability to present clearly and effectively patient history, assessment or care plans to a judge in Reese hearing or other court settings in a competent, concise and accurate manner.
- Acclimates patients to a health facility routine, encourages patients to participate and guides patients in personal hygiene as part of overall treatment and rehabilitation.
- Assesses, treats and monitors patientsâ physical medical needs and condition; and explains treatment procedures to patients.
- Maintains medication supplies and records; inventory and physical security of drugs and medical supplies; dispenses prescribed medications; administers medications, noting reactions and results; and consults with medical staff regarding individual patientsâ medications.
- Maintains complete charts and records of patientsâ condition, treatment, and reactions.
- Manage incidents of assaultive or inappropriate behavior.
- Provides direction of nursing related work to paraprofessional staff in the provisions of patient care.
- Assists in providing education to non-medical mental health staff regarding proper procedures used in the care of clientâs medical needs.
- Participates in the process of uniting medical and non-medical staff members to work together as a team in the best interest of the patient.
- Ability to diagnosis medical conditions from psychiatric symptoms.
- Coordinate and explain 1:1 (one to one) patient medical management plans.
- Requires a foundational knowledge of and facility with the laws relating to Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Services.
- Transports individual patients to and from facilities.
- Bachelorâs Degree or Associate Degree in Nursing, and one (1) year of professional experience as a Registered Nurse preferred.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse from the State of California, and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.
- Possession of a current valid CPR certification.
- Must possess a valid State of California Driver's license.
- Requires a Bachelorâs degree and one (1) year experience performing the duties of a Registered Nurse in a psychiatric or other acute care nursing setting.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse from the State of California, and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical.
- Possession of a current valid CPR certification.
- Must possess a valid State of California Driver's license.
- Working conditions are basic Clinic and community settings; full manual dexterity and visual acuity required.
- Work involves the potential for exposure to hostile and infectious diseases; some non-standard work hours are required.
- Acute assignment: Work is performed in crisis in-patient facilities; full manual dexterity and visual acuity required.
