Registered Nurse must be knowledgeable in multiple disciplines, pediatrics,
obstetrics, medicine, cardiology, trauma, orthopedics, oncology, infecti! ous
disease, and psychiatry. He/she must be knowledgeable in caring for all age
groups; newborns, infants, toddlers, childhood, adolescence, adult and
geriatric.
Essential Duties for all RN's in
the Emergency Department:
Meets all the essential duties of a Registered Nurse.
1. Nursing Process
Applies nursing process in direct
patient care.
a. Skillfully
practices triage of patients per Triage Policy
b. Assesses
patients and documents on the ED nursing T-system a minimum of
c. every two
hours or more often when necessary.
d. Appropriately intervenes when assessment reveals an
abnormal finding, examples include but are not limited to airway, breathing,
circulation.
e.
Knowledgeable regarding pre-hospital forms.
2. Nursing Care Delivery Process
a.
Knowledgeable regarding current emergency nursing practices and procedures.
b. Knowledgeable
of the legal aspects of emergency n! ursing care, including
but not limited to:
1. Treatment and/or release of minor to
someone other than parent.
2. EMTALA laws in regards to medical screening exams and
transfer procedures.
3. Procedure for medical/legal examination
and collection of evidence.
4. Procedure for obtaining legal blood
alcohol specimen.
5. Requirements for reporting suspected elder/dependent
adult and child abuse/neglect.

3. Technical Equipment
a. Chest tubes,
drainage system, and auto-transfuser.

Cardio-Respiratory monitors

e. Crash
cart/defibrillator (external and internal), ambu bag.
f. Oxygen
saturation/pulse oximetry

h. 12 lead ECG
i. Pacemaker, internal and external
j. Competent
operation of ReddiNet communication System
4. Environment
Assists in
maintenance of safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment:
Assesses safety/cleanliness of patient/unit
environment and reports conditions requiring change
Utilizes resources, equipment, and supplies
efficiently and with cost awareness
Reports hazardous conditions to appropriate
department for correction
Uses aseptic techniques for protection of
patients and personal safety
Prevents contamination and/or transfer of
Infection by use of the Exposure Control Plan and Standard Precautions in daily
work
Demonstrates knowledge of emergency codes
5. Leadership/Professionalism
Supervises nursing care provided by others

6. Education
Adheres to required educational standards
o
Maintains current licensure, certifications,
education, and physical health standards

Obtain! s a minimum of 15 units of continuing
education annually, 12 of which must be within area of specialty.
Computer training

Ability to perform and interpret ECG correctly
Ability institute Thrombolytic therapy protocol
Ability to assist in ICP insertion and
monitoring/interpretation of wave form
Ability to assist in insertion and monitoring of
arterial line and central lines.
Required Licensure and/or Certifications:
Current California Registered Nursing license
BLS
ACLS
PALS (within 6 months of hire or first available Antelope Valley Hospital
course)
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Certification, initial
certification required at first available hospital training class. Annual
recertification required
Annual Restraint Certification/Recertification
Annual JCAHO Review/Competencies
