Echocardio Technician - VAMC, Palo Alto, CA

Available Position(s): Echocardio Technician for the Cardiology department at the VA.

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week.

Period of Performance: Approximately May 15, 2013 to October 15, 2013 (40 hours per week for 16 weeks) and it may be extended upon acceptable performance and all necessary state reviews and approvals.

Description of Services (includes but it is not limited to):
Echocardiography technicians identify and record anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler. They incorporate the causes and results of a variety of symptoms and conditions into a plan of ultrasonic diagnostic examination. They change a! nd develop sounding techniques to accommodate such variables a! s limited patient mobility, variation in physical condition or dimension of the patient, presence of prosthesis or foreign objects, and ultrasonic response of different body parts. They produce diagnostic quality images and Doppler frequency recordings using M-mode, two-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound.

The sonographer has the intimate knowledge of thoracic anatomy and physiology as related to cardiovascular function. The technique is extremely operator dependent and the examination process is complex. The cardiac sonographer must use independent judgment in applying knowledge of clinical cardiology and ultrasound, and Doppler principles.

The sonographer must use problem-solving skills to optimize the evaluation and adjust the exam to ensure that it is comprehensive and accurate. The sonographer records and interprets the result of the exam and presents information and or possible diagnosis to interpreting physician. Failure to integrate such data may l! ead to inaccurate exam and erroneous clinical interpretation.

The sonographer performs 2D, M-Mode, continuous and pulse wave Doppler and color flow exam.

Performs transthoracic examinations, stress echocardiograms with and without Pharmaceuticals and transesophageal studies. The sonographer explains the procedure to the patient and performs exam. The sonographer teaches trainees (e.g. cardiology fellows) in performing and interpreting echo exams. The sonographer has a working knowledge of the setting, calibrating and operating procedures for the echocardiography machines and probes.

Medical record documentation must be sufficient to supports patient care and VHA medical cost care recovery initiatives. The sonographer will complete all other documentation as required by VA/VHA/ Medical Center regulations, policies, or procedures and attend VA meetings regarding quality assurance/improvement and accreditation if assigned.

The sonographer sh! all perform administrative services, which include, but are not limited! , to the following:

1. Complete required clinical and medical record documentation including the use of computerized patient record systems where applicable.

2. Attend service staff meetings and perform other administrative tasks as required. Maintain work area in a safe and orderly manner and perform other related activities and special assignments as required.

3. Participate in VA research projects with the concurrence of the Cardiology Service Chief, provided that all VA regulations and requirements are met.

4. Wear a VAPAHCS identification badge on the front of their clothing, as is required of other employees working at the VAPAHCS.

5. Perform urgent/emergent studies/procedures soon as possible.

6. Work collegially with technologists, nurses, supply personnel, administrative personnel, transporters, privacy personnel and support staff within the institution.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
! License: Shall have and maintain a registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer or equivalent certidficaiton.

Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

Experience: Two (2) years experience as a cardiac sonographer is required.

Language Skills: Must speak English proficiently.

Citizenship: Must be a US citizen or a US Permanent Resident (Green Card holder).

Infection control requirements:
Health Tests - Contractor personnel shall provide, upon VAMC request to review, proof of the following tests within five (5) days prior to first duty shift. Tests shall be current within the past year.

a. Tuberculosis Testing - All contractor personnel shall provide proof of a negative reaction to

Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) testing. A negative chest radiographic report for active tuberculosis shall be

provided in c! ases of positive PPD results. The PPD test shall be repeated annually. !

b. Rubella Tests - All contractor personnel shall provide proof of immunization for measles, mumps,

rubella or a rubella titer of 1.8 or greater. If the titer is less than 1.8, a rubella immunization must be

administered with follow-up documentation to the COR.

c. OSHA Regulation concerning Occupational Exposure to Blood borne Pathogens - The contractor

shall provide a generic self study training module to its personnel; provide Hepatitis B vaccination series at no

cost to its personnel who elect to receive it; maintain and distribute an exposure determination and control plan

to its personnel; maintain required records; and ensure that proper follow-up evaluation is provided following

an exposure incident.

Credentialing: Candidate will also be required to make application through the VET-PRO Internet process. Candidate will need to be enrolled in VET-PRO by the VA. Ultrasound Technologi! st must be registered in VET-PRO and be credentialed and privileged prior to beginning work under this contract. Credentialing can take up to six weeks to be completed.

2) DOJ (Name Check)

3) FD - 258 (Fingerprint checks)

4) Law Enforcement Agency checks

Professional References: Minimum of two to three references regarding related work with contact information. Must provide names and phone numbers to be used by the government to verify actual experience.
