The Department of History at the University of San Diego seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in the history of science, technology, and medicine. In addition to specialized upper-! division courses, the department will expect the successful applicant to teach relevant topical and other lower-division survey courses. Candidates should specify all areas in which they could teach. The department greatly values a demonstrated commitment to teaching to the breadth of human experience, research, and publication. While the period and research specialization are open, we seek applicants whose work will resonate with the university's increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary programs, including a new major in behavioral neuroscience; three dual B.S./B.A. engineering majors; a full complement of majors in the social and hard sciences; an honors program; and first-year Learning Living Communities built around such themes as sustainability, the natural world, and globalization, to name a few. The university has a large population of students interested in pre-health professions. It is home to the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, a premier graduate progra! m preparing nurses for Ph.D. and DNP degrees, and the future B! eyster Institute for Nursing Research, Advanced Practice, and Simulation. We also seek applicants who, in lending service to the wider community and the profession, can forge thoughtful and innovative connections with the San Diego region's prominent academic-scientific-technological hub, including institutions such as the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the Scripps Research Institute, the University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University, and over 200 companies involved in the biotechnological, biomedical, aerospace, defense, software, telecommunications, and clean technologies sectors. Because of the accelerating pace of technological change, we would like candidates to speak to ways in which they can help keep the study of history at our institution relevant in the coming decades.
