The Charge Nurse functions as a part of a leadership team designed to plan, organize, and control the health care process for applicable patient populations throu! gh the unit level management of assigned clinical process while assuming the responsibility and accountability for assigned shift operations. Continually works toward achieving patient satisfaction, productivity, financial and operational objectives. The Charge Nurse coordinates unit responsibilities and supervises and assigns duties to unit staff. Reports directly to the Department Director.
Position Summary: (Unit Specific)
The Charge Nurse provides support and education to the RNâs on the floor by collaborating and sharing his/her skills regarding patient care in a non-judgmental and non-critical manner. By working closely with the primary RN at the bedside, knowledge and skills are shared and the primary RN becomes more comfortable and knowledgeable in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients. Promoting his/her role and having an open and trusting relationship with staff throughout the hospital is an important part of the Cha! rge Nurse position.
Works with the Director to establish p! olicies and procedures as needed. Assists the Director in identifying education and orientation opportunities for clinical staff.
Intervenes, as necessary, on issues relating to patient complaints, health care providers' concerns, and operational issues, and takes measures to correct situation or ensures appropriate personnel are involved.
Quality Improvement initiatives: Participates in Unit Specific and Hospital quality initiative in a proactive and supportive role. As an experienced communicator, the Charge will play an active role in increasing the skill of the bedside RN through the evaluation of staff performance related to ICU standards of care and Quality Improvement initiatives.
Understands the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the facility. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.
On a regul! ar and continuous basis, exercises judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
Exchanges non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring good oral and written communication skills.

Educational Requirements:Required:
Specialty certification within 3 years of obtaining position
License/Registration/Certification:Required:
Current and active CA RN license.
Current BLS certification.
Unit specific certifications and qualifications (ex: PALS, ACLS, Chemotherapy)
Current ACLS certification
