Job Description
  • Conduct required testing on grain and flour samples such as moisture, protein, farinograph, alveograph or other tests as seen suitable by the Operations Manager and/or Cereal Chemist using applicable wet chemistry methods and various instruments (wet gluten analyzer, falling number, etc.) available in the laboratory.
  • Temper and mill wheat samples to obtain flour for further testing.
  • Perform baking tests (ie. bread, cookies) on flour samples to determine performance, quantitative and qualitative criteria.
  • Conduct balance calibrations, pipette verifications, monitoring temperatures of water baths, fridges, freezers, etc.
  • Monitor the daily conditions of the instruments (Farinograph, Alveograph, etc.)
  • Perform and record preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Adhere to proper labelling and documentation procedures for solvents, standards, reagents, etc.
  • Familiarize with applicable standard operation procedures (SOP)
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and support quality by assisting supervisor / manager in investigating questionable and unsatisfactory results.
  • Print control charts; maintain reagent logs, standards inventory, etc. documents.
  • Adhere to the Company’s Quality Policy and Procedures.
  • Be aware of customer requirements.
  • Directly responsible for their area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis.
  • Data entry into LIMS, Excel, and other data entry modules.
  • Print control charts; maintain reagent logs, standards inventory, etc. documents.
  • Adhere to the Company’s Quality Policy and Procedures.
  • Use Laboratory Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Be aware of customer requirements.
  • Adhere to company health and safety policies.
  • Provide accurate and timely results.
  • Directly responsible for their area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis.
  • Conduct proper sample storage and disposal practices and documentation.
  • Liaise and resolve customer’s queries/results with the supervisor / manager and contribute to the resolution of customer complaints.
  • Validate new methods for business growth or for customer requests, and work on improving the efficiency of existing methods and SOPs as per the instructions provided by the supervisor / manager.
  • Data entry into LIMS, Excel, and other data entry modules (i.e. Client data entry modules such as Grain Grading Module)
  • Conduct sample pre-processing (sub sampling, homogenization, splitting, cleaning) as necessary

Qualifications
  • In the process of completing a degree and/or diploma in a Science related program (Chemistry, Agriculture, Food Science etc.) is required.
  • A minimum of 1 – 3 years of experience in an Agricultural laboratory setting is an asset.
  • Familiar with Agricultural and Food matrixes an asset.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 17025:1999 requirements an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of good laboratory practices.
  • Familiar with official accredited methods such as AOAC, AOCS and USP methodology an asset.
  • Must be proficient in using various type of computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.)
