DEFINITION : The Medical Assistant (MA) determines and revises patient and clinician scheduling, including referral appointments. The position ensur! es all necessary authorizations are obtained prior to patient visits. The MA participates in the posting of charges and payments using the office Check-In/Check-Out process. The position will work with the physician to provide medical care to patients of various ages, according to the policy of the individual practice and in accordance with nursing professional standards as well as company policies and procedures. The position also has the ability to cover any Medical Assistant, similar clinical or non-clinical position as needed.
KNOWLEDGE : Knowledge of physician office scheduling procedures sufficient to create and manage efficient schedules for multiple physicians, as would be typically obtained in a year of similar experience. Knowledge of medical terminology sufficient to identify, interpret and explain medical procedures to patients, third party payors and medical facility personnel. Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, what constitutes a medical eme! rgency requiring a physician or licensed nurse's attention, sc! ope of practice of a Medical Assistant for a medical office practice.
SKILLS : Through direction of the physician, must provide prompt and courteous patient care. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate with public in a courteous manner, have excellent telephone and customer service skills and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with patients, professional staff, and others using positive communication strategies and guest relation skills. Ability to accept work direction form multiple sources, prioritize tasks, and remain adaptable to changes in work environment, have demonstrated ability to accurately receive and relay information over the telephone and in person, and have experience handling various confidential documents and reports. Knowledge of medical billing and skills sufficient to accurately enter correct charge and payment data into the computer system. Typing speed and accuracy at 45 WPM, allowing for accura! te data entry and/or query of accounts while patients are on the phone. The ability to operate office equipment as required (i.e. fax, copier, scanner, etc.).
EXPERIENCE : High School Diploma or equivalent. Medical office experience sufficient to perform all duties and aspects of a medical office, including computerized scheduling and billing, complex coding, and specific and general office duties, as can be obtained with 2-3 years of experience in a medical office. Sufficient knowledge of HMO/PPO insurance programs to correctly assess the need for prior authorization of procedures/referrals and to interpret patient financial information. Sufficient current knowledge of medical billing procedures, including CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes, and medical terminology to accurately bill patients' various medical insurance carriers. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting program; six months acute or ambulatory care or related experience; EKG, Cardiac monitoring preferr! ed; CPR certification required; AAMA, CCMA, or AMT certification prefer! red.
